Transportation in Bahamas

Transportation in The Bahamas varies depending on which island you are located on. Bahamas has hundreds of island to explore. Interestingly, only 30 of the islands are inhabited. You can travel across the island and even within hours.

There are several options of transportation that will help you in getting around the Bahamas. But one of the most popular transport is Jitneys. However, Jitneys are public buses that you will find outside the airports. But the only problem with this public bus is that this service is not available on other islands. As the trip to the Bahamas does not limit to only exploring the city, so you will need other modes of transport at one point or the other. Moreover, there are many options of transportations that you will find in the Bahamas

Cars

You can rent a car when you are on a solo trip or traveling to the Bahamas with your family. It is a convenient way of traveling and exploring the beauty of this place. One added bonus is there no need to worry about the strict scheduled time for excursions. You will have the flexibility to visit the beaches and attractions at your leisure.

While other transportations exert extra stress of maintaining a strict schedule, renting a car is much more sophisticated. But the only problem with the car is that the islands are older and the roads are less traveled and this leads to poorly conditioned roads. Therefore, if you rent a car be sure that you are a good driver. Another helpful fact, in the Bahamas, the driver drive on the left side of the road! So, we do not reccommend driving if you are uncomfortable with this setup. You can simply book a sedan/SUV/Limo from Baggy Rocks. They provide quality service along with a number of satisfying online reviews.

Local Taxi are good however, most are not in good running condition and may not have air conditioning inside.

Taxi

If you want a tension free exploration of this beautiful country, then hire a taxi. It is an easy and flexibleway of traveling in the Bahamas after jitney. As jitneys are not available in most of the places in the Bahamas it is a good option to hire a taxi. But not all taxis are in good condition in the Bahamas. You can even have a bumpy ride so be prepared for it. While moving on to the taxi price, it varies from place to place. However, the prices are fixed by the government and calculated as per the miles you travel.

Jitney

Your trip to the Bahamas will be incomplete if you have not traveled through jitney. The name might seem a bit strange but it is actually a public bus. It is the most popular form of transportation in The Great Bahamas Island and New Province Island. These public buses are capable of holding 32 people and the working hours are from 6.30am to 7 pm. Each ride in these buses will cost you around $1.25 to $3 in New Province Island and $1 to $8 in Grand Bahamas. One downfall is the buses are not upgraded regularly therefore, they may be very hot and without air conditioning. Here is a PDF of the Bus Routes available in Nassau. Unfortunately, the Transportation company does not have an official website it scheduled!
