The Bahamian dollar is maintained at the same level as the U.S. dollar and both are accepted universally in Nassau. Credit cards are accepted at most locations in Nassau. ATMs are readily available throughout the island. It is a good idea to have cash assessable for tips and small trinkets.
The climate in the Bahamas is sub-tropical. In the islands there are basically two seasons: Wet and Dry. Average temperatures range between 70 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit. The Wet Season is from June through November which is also the hurricane season. The height of the tropical activity is traditionally between August and October. The Dry Season, much cooler and less humid, is between December and May. Temperatures as low as the 60s during the Dry Season are rare but do happen. Bright colored loose airy clothing is the recommended daytime wear. A light sweater or jacket should be part of your travel gear during the Dry Season. Brief heavy showers are common throughout the year. We call that Liquid Sunshine.
Both US and Bahamas Immigration Laws require all travelers to have a valid passport.
Although tap water is safe to drink, it is a precious commodity in The Bahamas. Bottled water is readily available throughout the island.

Junkanoo participant in costume during the 2006 Parade

The city’s chief festival is Junkanoo, an energetic, colorful street parade of brightly costumed people dancing to the rhythmic accompaniment of cowbells, drums, and whistles. The word ‘Junkanoo’ is named after the founder ‘John Kanoo’. The celebration occurs on December 26, July 10, and January 1, beginning in the early hours of the morning (1:00 a.m.) and ending around 10 a.m. At the end of the Junkanoo procession, judges award cash prizes for the best music, costumes, and overall group presentation. These Bahamians spend all year preparing their handmade costumes by using colored crepe paper and cardboard.
